Chess Varient

Four Players

This is chess that includes four players. There are several different names for four-way chess: chess4, quadrafour, four-handed chess, fouray, and vendetta. The first varient was created in 1793 and variations since then have included differenet extension sizes, conditions for winnning, mated rules, and positions for the queen and king in setup.

Rules

The rules are basically the same as standard chess, though there are rule diffrences or versions. Chess clubs in different cities may have their own version of the rules. The chess board is adapted to accomodate four players; each side has three more rows with eight squares.

Teams or Singles

The players can team up or play singles. The objective in team play is to get the two opposing kings checkmated together. The members of a team both work to wipe out the chess pieces of the opposite team and to checkmate their kings. To end the game two kings have to be check mated or when just one is in checkmate it is a draw. In singles play each player is on his own and battles the other three. When a single player is the only one not checkmated the singles game is ended.

I did not know that 4 way chess existed - sounds great. Do you need a 4 way chess board or is there some way of using two boards together?

Hi John,

You get a 4-way chess board. Rock on chess!

I just bought three very inexpensive chess boards and cut two of them in half and glued them to the sides of the third. You just have to match up the color of the squares right. It's not fancy but it works just the same.
