Car Crash: A Seatbelt Prevents Injuries
68Seat Belts Prevent Death and Injury
The statistics show that not wearing a seat belt is very dangerous when involved in a car crash. Sixty three percent of the people that weren’t wearing a seat belt when involved in car accidents died. It reminds me of an acquaintance of mine that was driving drunk and speeding. His car crash caused him to be paralyzed; he drove into a pole. The statistics concerning youth and particularly young men between sixteen and twenty-five years of age prove that they wear a seat belt less than any other group. It is this group that seems to believe they are death and injury proof, but they speed, drink and drive, and crash more than any other drivers in the United States. Apparently, education about safe driving like slowing down, don’t drink and drive, and wearing seat belts doesn’t affect most of them.
What can make them wear a seat belt are tougher seat belt laws and strong enforcement campaigns. NHTSA reported in 2006 that 68% of the occupants of cars who were sixteen to twenty years old and died in car accidents weren’t wearing seat belts. That was during the nighttime hours, but in daytime hours 57% were not using seat belts.
NHTSA reports thirty-five percent of the teenage deaths involve motor vehicles. Teen crashes are influenced by distractions when driving like loud music, cell phone use, drug and alcohol use. They have three ways they are trying to reduce deaths and injuries by car crashes: improving usage of seat belts, driver’s programs that are graduated, and decreasing the access to alcohol.
Many adults don’t wear their safety belts, sixty percent of the adults up to age 44 don’t wear seat belts, for adults ages 55 to 64 fifty-two percent don’t buckle up, and forty-one percent of adults sixty-four and above don’t wear safety belts. In the United Sates in 2000 6,356,000 car crashes occurred, 3.3 million people were injured, and 41,821 people died from car accidents according to the Federal Highway Administration.
